The assessment is deliberately short and deliberately senior. It is written for CXOs, CHROs, L&D Heads, Country Heads and heads of data and digital transformation, not for engineers. Each question maps to one of five dimensions of enterprise AI readiness.

• Strategy, whether AI has a named owner, a funded plan and a link to a business outcome.
• Data, whether data is accessible, governed, reasonably clean and usable for modelling.
• Talent and capability, whether leaders and teams have the applied skills to specify, buy and supervise AI work.
• Governance and risk, whether the organisation has policy, controls and a regulator-aligned position.
• Use cases and delivery, whether pilots are moving into production with measured value.

The four readiness levels

Your score maps to one of four levels. An AI Bystander has interest but no funded plan, no owner and no governance. An AI Explorer is running pilots, usually in isolated pockets, without a shared roadmap. An AI Contender has a funded plan, a data foundation and a governance position, and is moving pilots into production. An Agentic Enterprise is operating AI at scale, with measured value, controls and a capability pipeline.

The value of the level is not the label. It is the fact that the executive committee can finally agree on where the organisation stands, and therefore what the next twelve months should fund.

How to run the diagnostic across your leadership team

The most useful pattern we see across African enterprises is simple. Have three people take the assessment independently, the CXO who owns the business outcome, the CHRO or L&D Head who owns capability, and the head of data or digital transformation who owns delivery.
